The Private Pilot License:

A Private Pilot License (PPL) is the most popular starting point for those wishing to learn to fly.  Per FAR Part 61, a Private Pilot candidate must:

  • Be at least 17 years old for the PPL

  • Be at least 16 years old to solo

  • Be proficient in the English language

  • Complete a Class 3 FAA Flight Physical

  • Complete at least 20 hours of flight instruction

  • Complete at least 40 hours of total flight time

  • Receive and log ground training with an instructor

  • Pass an FAA written examination

  • Pass a practical examination with an examiner (i.e., "flight test")

Earning a PPL can be one of the most rewarding and enjoyable experiences of your life!  It grants its holder the freedom to fly and to share it with family and friends.  But a PPL can also be the first important milestone into an aviation career as it's a prerequisite for the Commercial Pilot License.
